The apartment block in Gossau is based on the ‘slab’ principle, which shapes both the spatial organisation and the architectural expression in equal measure. By shifting the walls, a varied sequence of open and enclosed spaces is created, which breaks down traditional circulation zones and transforms them into a fluid spatial continuum.

The clear separation between communal and private areas creates a high standard of spatial quality and fosters a sense of community within the flats.

The structural ‘partition’ principle is evident in the building’s volume and façade, and gives the structure its distinctive appearance. As a result, the building blends naturally into its surroundings and avoids the impression of a monolithic mass.
